Milk-based formula
Ingredients
-
500ml whole, raw cow's milk, preferably from grass-fed cows.
-
1/4 cup (60ml) homemade liquid whey. Where to find: find the recipe for homemade whey here. Note: Use only homemade whey from yogurt, kefir, or separated raw milk.
-
4 tablespoons lactose.
-
1/4 small spoon Bifidobacterium infantis.
-
2 or more tablespoons cream of good quality (preferably raw or not ultra-pasteurized), more if you use milk from Holstein cows. Or organic full cream. Where to find: raw cream can be skimmed from the top of a pot of raw milk.
-
1/2 small spoon fermented cod liver oil
-
(1 small spoon pressed sunflower oil, cold-pressed & organic )
-
(1 small spoon extra virgin olive oil.)
-
2 small spoons coconut oil.
-
2 small spoons nutritional yeast flakes. (Natufood, Edelgist (health food store))
-
2 small spoons gelatin.
-
445 ml filtered water.
-
1/4 small spoon acerola powder or camu camu
The oils in parentheses help approximate the omega-3-6-9 balance found in breast milk. If sunflower oil doesn't suit you, you can leave it out; the recipe does not depend on it.
Instructions
-
1. Measure 500ml fresh milk and remove 2 tablespoons.
-
2. Pour about half of the water into a pan and place over medium heat.
-
3. Add the gelatin and lactose and let dissolve, stirring occasionally.
-
4. When gelatin and lactose have dissolved, remove from heat and add the remaining water to cool the mixture.
-
5. Stir in the coconut oil until it melts.
-
6. Put the remaining ingredients in a blender.
-
7. Add the water mixture and mix for about three seconds.
-
8. Put in glass bottles or a glass jar and place in the refrigerator.
-
9. Before giving to the baby: warm the bottle by placing it in hot water or a bottle warmer. Never heat in the microwave.
Variation: Goat Milk Formula
Although goat's milk is rich in fat, it should be used with caution for infant feeding because it contains no folate and little vitamin B12, both of which are essential for growth and development. Adding nutritional yeast to provide folate is essential. To compensate for the low vitamin B12 content: if you make the milk-based formula (above) with goat's milk, add 2 small spoons of organic raw chicken liver (frozen for 14 days, finely grated) to the batch. Also start to pay attention to giving egg yolk from four months.
Liver-based formula
The Weston A. Price liver-based formula also mimics the nutritional profile of breast milk. It is very important to include coconut oil in this formula, as it is the only ingredient that provides the special medium-chain saturated fats found in breast milk. As with the milk-based formula, all oils must be truly organic and cold-pressed.
Ingredients
-
±900 ml homemade beef or chicken broth
-
±57 grams organic liver, cut into small pieces
-
5 tablespoons lactose¹
-
1/4 small spoons Bifidobacterium infantis
-
1/4 cup (60 ml) homemade liquid whey
-
1 tablespoon coconut oil
-
1/2 small spoon fermented cod liver oil
-
(1 tsp unrefined organic sunflower oil)
-
(2 tsp extra virgin organic olive oil)
-
1/4 tsp acerola powder or camu camu
The oils in parentheses help approximate the omega-3-6-9 balance found in breast milk. If sunflower oil doesn't suit you, you can leave it out; the recipe does not depend on it.
Instructions
-
1. Let the liver simmer gently in the broth until the meat is cooked.
-
2. Puree with an immersion blender or in a food processor.
-
3. When the liver broth has cooled, stir in the remaining ingredients.
-
4. Store in a very clean glass or stainless steel container.
-
5. Serving: stir the formula well and pour ±180 ml-±240 ml into a very clean glass bottle. Attach a clean nipple and place the bottle in a pan of gently boiling water until the formula feels warm but not hot, shake well and give to the baby. (Never heat in the microwave!)
