Eating organ meat or taking organ capsules: which suits you?

Fresh organ meat and organ capsules are not the same product in different packaging. With fresh organ meat, you eat a regular food portion that you prepare, taste, and use as a meal. Capsules provide a small, measured amount of dried organ meat without any cooking.

The best choice depends on what you will actually use. If you enjoy cooking liver, heart, kidney, or spleen, you do not need capsules. If you find the taste or availability a barrier, you may find capsules more practical.

Both start with real organ meat

Fresh organ meat offers culinary freedom and a larger share of food. You decide the type, amount, preparation method, and frequency. Heart tastes and cooks differently from liver, while kidney requires a different approach.

The downside is that purchasing, storing, and preparing it require attention. Organ meat is also nutritionally concentrated. More and more often is not automatically better.

What do you get with fresh organ meat?

Organ capsules are primarily a convenience product. The organs are dried, ground, and processed into capsules. The daily amount is much smaller than a plate of fresh organ meat.

  1. No preparation: convenient for those who find the taste difficult.
  2. Fixed composition: the label specifies which organs are included and in what quantities.
  3. Small serving: not equivalent to a complete meal.
  4. Supplement guidelines: follow the dosage, warnings, and expiration date.

What do you get with capsules?

  • Choose fresh if you enjoy cooking, want to experiment with flavors, and use organ meat as a complete food.
  • Choose capsules if convenience and a consistent small amount are more important.
  • Don't choose both thoughtlessly without considering your total intake.
  • Don't choose a product based on claims alone; check its origin, ingredients, and analysis.

Choose based on your goal and routine

Real Roots Organ Mix consists of equal parts beef liver, beef heart, beef kidney, and beef spleen, in a bovine gelatin capsule. The organs are raw freeze-dried and sourced from grass-fed Dutch cattle.

This makes the composition transparent, but the capsules are still a supplement and not a replacement for varied meals.

Be careful with liver and vitamin A

Liver contains a high amount of preformed vitamin A. The Nutrition Centre therefore advises eating liver no more than once a week. Liver is not recommended during pregnancy because of its high vitamin A content. This consideration also applies to liver supplements: consult a healthcare professional before use and check the label.

Frequently asked questions about eating organ meat or taking organ capsules

The main questions answered briefly and clearly.

Are organ capsules the same as fresh organ meat?

No. Capsules provide a small, measured amount of dried organ. Fresh organ meat can be part of a meal as a regular serving of food.

Are capsules better absorbed?

You can’t make a general statement like that. Absorption varies by nutrient, product, dose, and individual. Above all, choose based on transparent ingredients and appropriate use.

Can capsules replace a meal?

No. Organ capsules are a supplement and do not provide the amount of energy and nutrients found in a complete meal.

Can you use Orgain Mix during pregnancy?

The mix contains liver and may therefore be high in vitamin A. During pregnancy, use only after consulting a qualified healthcare professional.
